Description
Meare Court Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the 17th century, was possibly enlarged in the 18th century, and underwent alterations in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of blue lias random rubble with quoins at the west end and features a steeply pitched slate roof. There is a half hipped wing covered with triple Roman tiles and coped verges on the south gable end. The brick stacks have been rebuilt on the east gable end and south side, while the west gable end is roughcast with offsets. The farmhouse has a T-plan layout, with the main block consisting of two cells and an inserted cross passage.
The north front has two storeys with an attic and a single-storey, two-bay east wing. The main block features two 12-pane sash windows on the left side, while the right half of the facade is unlit. There is a 20-pane sash window on the ground floor to the left of a mid-20th century gabled porch. The east wing has 16-pane sash windows flanking a central many-paned door from the 20th century. A long rear wing, covered with double Roman tiles, has been refenestrated in the mid-20th century.
Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to contain a nine-panel moulded compartment ceiling at the west end of the main block, which now has an inserted cross passage. The panelled east room features a semi-circular headed niche beside the fireplace. The attic is said to be divided by a rough elm board partition with a door made from two planks set in a depressed four-centred arch head frame. The south wing has stop-chamfered beams with run-out stops, but has otherwise been much altered.
