Description
The railings, gatepiers, gates, and archway fronting Grey Lodge, extending south, date from the mid-19th century. They are made of cast iron and feature a blue lias rubble archway. The railings have a spearhead design with octagonal finials and extend about 5 meters east of the gate, continuing in front of Grey Lodge for approximately 30 meters, where they meet the archway. The gatepiers are chamfered to octagons and are signed by Wightman and Dening, a firm based in Chard that operated between 1848 and 1861. There is a single gate with semicircular support for the spearhead uprights, along with an adjoining kissing gate that retains its curved railings. The archway is constructed of rubble with flat coping and features a semi-circular arch made with dressed voussoirs. The end pilasters and abutments of the arch break forward slightly and were restored in the 20th century. This structure forms a cohesive group.
