Description
The railings, gatepiers, and gates fronting Buttle's Lodge date from around 1870 and are made of cast iron. There are two pairs of gatepiers with gates, which are flanked by spearhead railings that have domed terminals and are chamfered to octagons. The larger versions of these railings form the gatepiers, one of which is inscribed in raised lettering with "C Dening and Co Chard." The single gates feature spearhead uprights and semicircular reinforcement, with some employing a patent lower hinge. The railings sweep back to the entrances flanking the lodge, extending approximately 150 meters in length, with only one terminal showing damage. Dening and Co, the iron founders responsible for this work, were in business after 1861.
