Milestone. Mid C18. Unidentified stone with attached cast-iron plaques, about 750mm high, set diagonally with plaques set vertically and inscribed in raised lettering in raised surround: north face 'Chard 1', south face 'Axminster 6', The road was turnpiked in 1753. (Bentley and Murless, Somerset Roads, 1985).
