Description
This is a milestone dating from the mid-18th century, located at the National Grid Reference ST 3257 0721. It is made of an unidentified stone and stands about 750 millimeters high. The milestone is set diagonally, with attached cast-iron plaques that are positioned vertically. The plaques feature raised lettering within a raised surround, with the north face inscribed 'Chard 1' and the south face inscribed 'Axminster 6'. The road on which it stands was turnpiked in 1753, as noted in Bentley and Murless's work on Somerset Roads from 1985.
