Description

The walls, gates, and railings enclosing the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin were built in 1842 and are made of wrought iron. The structure has a quadrant plan, enclosing the churchyard to the north and east. The square spearheaded railings are set in a stone plinth on a rubblestone base, with urn finials on the main supports. There are two gates, one on the north side and one on the east side, featuring long and short spearheaded railings with a quatrefoil frieze at the base and middle rail, along with urn finials on the sides and center. The gates have an overthrow in the shape of a depressed semicircle that dips to three quatrefoils; the north gate also includes a scrolled lamp support above it.

To the west and south, high rubblestone and flint walls are attached to the Church Room, bounding the churchyard. The wall at the rear north corner slopes down at intervals for approximately 45 meters to meet the railings at the front. The wall at the front south corner extends about 20 meters southward before turning east for approximately 35 meters to connect with the railings on the east side of the churchyard.
