Description
The piers, gates, and walls at Holyrood House date from around 1840. They feature two substantial piers made of Ham Hill stone, each with hollow-moulded recessed rectangular panels that contain pointed arches and sunk spandrels. The piers have moulded cornices and shallow pyramidal caps, and they are strongly chamfered. The iron gates cover two-thirds and one-third of the opening, with long and short rails projecting below the bottom horizontal. There is a pierced frieze of floral squares just below the centre of the gates. The short rails are topped with ornamented spearheads, while the long rails have large trefoil-type heads linked by semi-circular loops; these ornaments are made of cast iron. A high wall constructed of chert extends to the church boundary on the left (east) and continues west, where it turns south to meet an outbuilding.
