Description

Chapter Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, with a rear wing likely rebuilt in the early 17th century. It has a stucco exterior, which is said to be over cob, and features a slate roof with a crested ridge and a central ridge stack. The building has a three-room cross-passage plan, with the rear wing located to the right. It stands two storeys high and has a four-window range. There is a six-panel door to the right of the centre, and all windows have forward frames with 19th-century two-over-two pane sashes.

Inside, the cross-passage is lined with 19th-century tongued-and-grooved panelling. The room to the left has a fireplace that backs onto the passage, with the stud partition removed. A 20th-century staircase is now positioned against the left-hand wall. The room to the right features a Tudor-arched fireplace in the rear right corner, and a repositioned stair in the rear left corner blocks a Tudor-arched doorway to the passage. This room also has three jointed cruck trusses with trenched purlins.

In the rear wing, there is a fireplace that backs onto the central room. The room above has a fireplace in the same position, with a fleur-de-lys design in raised plasterwork above it. A 20th-century partitioned passage leads to a room at the back of the rear wing, which has two reset jointed cruck trusses with tenoned and trenched purlins, as well as mortices for arch bracing. The roof originally extended into Nos 58 and 60, and the absence of smoke-blackening suggests a 16th-century date rather than a late medieval one; it is likely that the roof was originally open from the first floor.
