Description

No. 23 is a 17th-century cottage located on the south side of High Street in West Coker. It is constructed from local stone that has been cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings, and features a pantiled roof with a stepped gable on the east side only. The building has two storeys and two bays, with hollowed chamfered mullioned windows below that consist of three lights, displaying unworked top mitres and lacking labels. Above these, there are two small two-light casements. The central doorway is chamfered and cambered arched, featuring a thick lintel and a part-glazed 19th-century four-panel door. The west gable has been rendered and buttressed following the demolition of No. 25 High Street. The interior has not been seen. Additionally, there is a north boundary wall made of local stone rubble, approximately three metres high, located two metres from the cottage. This wall is important for the safety of the house and contributes to the street scene. The cottage is attached on the left to No. 21 High Street.
