Pair Of Monuments In Churchyard, About 7 Metres South-West Of Porch, Church Of St Michael And All Angels

There are two chest tombs located in the churchyard, about 7 metres south-west of the porch of the Church of St Michael and All Angels. Both monuments date from the 19th century.

The first, known as the Swaffield monument, is situated approximately 6 metres south-south-west of the porch. It is made of Ham stone and features a stepped base, a tall chamfered plinth, and plain recessed panels on each side, without a frieze. The top is hipped with chamfered coving. This tomb commemorates Eleanor Swaffield, who died in 1775, and John Swaffield, who died in 1830.

The second, the Budge monument, is located about 7 metres south-west of the porch. This later 19th-century chest tomb is also made of Ham stone and has a stepped base with a moulded plinth. It features Gothic-style expanded quatrefoil panels—one on each end and two on each side—without a frieze, and has moulded coving leading to a ledgered hipped top. This monument commemorates Edward Budge, who died in 1880, among others. It is a notable example of the later style of chest tomb.
