Two Monuments In Churchyard, About 3 Metres West Of Porch, Church Of St Thomas

There are two chest tombs located in the churchyard, about 3 metres west of the porch of the Church of St Thomas. Both tombs date from the 18th century and are made of Ham stone.

The first, known as the Northcote monument, commemorates John Northcote, who died in 1738. It features a moulded plinth and wave-moulded panels on each face, with the flanks having a partial centre drop and fluted pilasters. The top is hipped with rounded leading edges and lacks a frieze.

The second tomb, which is immediately to the north of the Northcote monument, is an unidentified chest tomb that commemorates Thomas, who died in 1709. This tomb also has a moulded plinth and features semi-circular arched panels with side pilasters, imposts, keystones, and dentils—one at each end and two on each flank. It has cyma-recta coving to a heavy hipped top.
