Description
This listing describes a group of three chest tombs located in the churchyard south of the chancel of the Church of St Mary. The tombs date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are made of Ham stone.
The first monument, an unidentified chest tomb from around 1700, is situated about one meter south of the chancel. It features a moulded plinth and semi-circular arched panels, with one panel at each end and two on each side. The design includes imposts, keystones, and dentilling around the arch, but lacks a frieze. The top is a heavy hipped design with clad-recta coving. This tomb commemorates, among others, Mary, who died in 1722, although the other inscriptions are badly worn.
The second tomb, known as the Fanton monument, is located about two meters south of the chancel and dates from the 17th century. It also consists of Ham stone and has a moulded plinth with similar semi-circular arched panels and architectural details as the first monument. This tomb commemorates Thomas Fanton, Gent, who died in 1668.
The third monument, the Hankills Monument, is positioned about four meters south of the chancel and dates from the early 18th century. It is made of Ham stone and features a moulded plinth with semi-circular arched panels, imposts, keystones, and dentilling around the arch, with a cyma-recta coving to a heavy hipped top. This tomb commemorates the wife of William Hankills, who died in 1711.
