Description

The Chilthorne Domer War Memorial is a stone structure located to the south of St Mary’s Church. It features a Celtic cross atop a square column and base, which stands on a square, tapered pedestal. The south face of the pedestal has an inscription honoring seven men who died in the First World War, stating:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN / PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / (NAMES) / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND / COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR. / 1914 – 1918.

The east face commemorates three men who lost their lives in the Second World War, with the inscription:

SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939 – 1945, / IN MEMORY OF / (NAMES).

The west face honors Lieutenant R W Madden of the Light Dragoons, who died during the Bosnian War in 1995, with the inscription:

KILLED IN THE CAUSE / OF PEACE.

Above the inscriptions on the west and east faces is a Latin cross, and each of the three inscriptions concludes with the quotation “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE” from Ecclesiasticus 44:14.
