Description

The horse engine house, located about 50 meters north of Hatch Court Farm, dates from around 1820 and has been altered in the early 20th century. It is constructed from squared and coursed local grey and yellow sandstone and features an irregular conical thatched roof. The building has an irregular seven-sided plan and is two storeys high. The ground floor includes segmental-headed openings on six sides, with the lower portions blocked by doorways on the north and north-west sides. There are two squared-headed loft openings on the first floor. Inside, there is a central wooden column with sockets for rachets and a king-post roof. This structure is a rare example of a two-storey horse engine house with the shaft drive column still in place.
