Description
Barkbeth Horse Engine House is a horse engine house built in the early to mid 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The structure is supported by monolithic stone pillars, which are connected in some areas by rubble stone walling, all beneath a hipped Westmorland slate roof. It is a single-storey building with two bays and a canted bay at the north end to accommodate the circular path of the drive horse. The spaces between the pillars have been infilled with 20th-century sheeting and boarding. Inside, a wide tie beam truss connects the parallel sections of the sidewalls and supports ties to the faceted end wallplate. There are parallel beams at right angles to the principal tie beam that extend into the sidewall of an adjacent outbuilding. Additionally, remnants of former drive shaft supports can be found attached to the roof timbering.
