Description
19 and 21 Quay Street are two cottages located below street level in Minehead, dating from the 17th century. Number 19 was extended to the left around 1980, while number 21 underwent alterations in the 19th century. The cottages feature painted render over rubblestone and have a continuous double-Roman tile roof with a rubblestone ridge stack on the former left gable end and a rear stack for number 21. Originally, each cottage had a single-unit plan and they are both two storeys high, with first-floor windows positioned at eaves level.
Number 19 has a two-window range, with one window on the ground floor to the right and a planked door to the left. The first floor features four-light painted oak chamfered mullioned windows, each with two 19th-century panes per light, while the ground floor has a similar five-light window. The interior of number 19 includes two 17th-century stop-chamfered cross-beams on the ground floor; one beam has been cut to raise the ceiling height above a now-blocked door. The room above is a flying freehold over number 21. Number 21 has a one-window range with 19th-century three-light windows and a 20th-century door to the right. The interior of number 21 has not been inspected.
