Description

The stocks and whipping post, located about 10 metres south of the south aisle of the Church of St Augustine in West Monkton, date from the 18th century, though they may be older. They were moved to the churchyard in the early 20th century, and a new canopy was added in the late 20th century. The structure is made of wood and wrought iron. The whipping post stands about 1.5 metres high and is broken at the top, with its corners bound by metal strips and a set of manacles attached. The stocks consist of hinged boards with six circular openings, although the hinges are much eroded. These features are set beneath a plain roofed canopy supported by four posts. The survival of whipping posts is uncommon.
