Description

No. 16 Sadler Street is a house dating from the 17th century, with a largely 18th or early 19th century facade. It is situated at the end of a short row. The building is constructed with roughcast render, a Welsh slate and pantile roof, an abutment to the north, and a coped gable to the south. A brick chimney stack is also present. It’s a parallel-range building with a central gutter. The rear range is narrower than the front and likely represents an earlier, separate structure.

The exterior is two storeys and two bays. It features a stone plinth, a double plain sash window to the second bay, and an oriel window with a flat roof above. The first bay has a 6-panel door, approached by two steps, with a plain rectangular fanlight set under a moulded timber hood supported by console brackets. A plain sash window is situated on the first floor. A coped retaining wall, dating from around 1869 when the adjacent site was cleared to form the Swan Garden, covers the south gabled ends.

The rear elevation has a steep roof and a coped south gable with a four-pane sash gabled dormer window above. There are two large, close-set, staggered four-pane sash windows, cut through a horizontal stone drip-course. A doorway and a tripartite sash window are situated on the ground floor. A brick stack rises through the rubble south gable, and a stone stack is located to the right (north), raised in brick, which may have been an external stack relating to the adjacent No. 18.

The interior has not been inspected.
