Description

No. 85 Main Street is a house that dates back partially to the 16th century, with extensions or alterations made in the late 17th or early 18th century. The building now has its gable end facing the street, although its orientation changed with the addition of a rear range. The street-facing section forms a cross wing but may have originally been part of a single unit. It is rendered over a timber frame, which can be seen internally in one wall as close studding resting on a high rubble plinth. This plinth is visible around the entire exterior of the house. The roof is made of Welsh slate.

The front of the house features two large projecting rubble stacks with two and three brick flues. Between these stacks, the wall is constructed of rubble and brick and includes two wooden mullioned and transomed windows that light the staircase. The front gable wall has two additional wooden mullioned and transomed windows, while the rear has a triple light sash window on each floor. The gable itself jetties at the apex.

The rear wing is made of brick, has two storeys, and consists of two bays. It features a doorway at the angle with a moulded wood architrave topped by a reclining carved lion. To the right of the doorway are two wooden mullioned and transomed windows with flat arched heads. The upper windows are four-light sashes with cambered heads, including one new light above the door. There is a brick plinth and a moulded string course. An insurance sign is located above the door. Beyond this, there is a lower brick wing with a plinth and a plain string course, featuring various casement windows with cambered heads on either side of the doorway. The rear of this wing is cobbled up to the first floor level and includes some blocked brick arched openings. The rear of the main range has two bay windows with leaded lights dating from around 1920.
