Description
No. 1 Market Hill is a house in a row, built in the late 18th century with some alterations from the mid-19th century. The exterior is rendered and colourwashed, topped with a Welsh slate roof that features coped gables and brick chimney stacks, which are partly rendered. The house has a symmetrical parallel range plan, although the front range has been modified, lacking a rear slope at its west end.
It stands two storeys high with attics and consists of three bays. The building has a plinth and a cornice with a timber box gutter on a coved cornice. The outer bays have sash windows, with plain windows below and 12-pane windows above. In the center, there is a 20th-century panelled door with a square transom light in a plain surround, and above it is a blind panel featuring an ovolo mould architrave, impost blocks, and a keystone. The ground-floor windows have 'floating' keystones, and all the cills are made of stone. Additionally, there are three 2-light 20th-century casement windows in gabled dormers, with slating on the gables and cheeks.
The interior has not been inspected. The site has been occupied since at least the 13th century when the street was known as Byestewel. It is likely that this property was rebuilt around the same time as Nos. 4 and 6, with which it shares some architectural details. No. 1 is set back approximately 300 meters from these adjoining units.
