Description
No. 4 Castle Street is a house from the mid-18th century, with a roof added in the 19th century. It is built from limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring brick gable stacks and a slate roof. The house has a single-depth central entry plan with a rear wing, and it stands two storeys high, with a cellar and attic, comprising a five-window range.
The symmetrical front of the house includes a plinth with a moulded band, a plain plat band, an eaves cornice, and quoins. The doorway features a steep pediment that connects to the plat band, along with a three-pane overlight and a panelled door. The windows are 19th-century 6/6-pane sashes with architraves, and there are two 19th-century gabled dormers with 2/2-pane sashes. The right-hand stack is set forward of the ridge. At the rear, there is a former stable range that has a three-light casement window with leaded lights.
Inside, the house has a central through-passage leading to a right-hand 19th-century dogleg stair with stick balusters and a ramped rail. The roof features a four-bay 19th-century collar truss with tenon purlins, and there are half-glazed doors with stained glass. The front room includes a bolection-moulded fire surround.
