Description
No. 16 Castle Street is a house dating from the early 19th century, although it has earlier origins. The building is constructed of rendered limestone rubble with an ashlar plinth and dressings, featuring a brick gable stack on the right and a double Roman tile roof. It has a single-depth plan and consists of two storeys, a cellar, and an attic, with a three-window range facing the street.
The left-hand doorway is blocked and was previously round-arched, while there is a stone mullion cellar window. The first floor has three windows, with the middle one blocked, and there are two ground-floor windows, all featuring 8/8-pane sashes. The gable end has a single window with an attic casement, a similar sash, and a three-light canted bay. At the rear, there is an 18th-century and early 19th-century former outbuilding made from similar materials, which has now been incorporated into the house. The interior has not been inspected, and it is possible that the house was rebuilt over an early 18th-century cellar.
