Description
No. 9 High Street is an attached house that was originally an inn and is now used as a shop and office. It dates from the mid to late 17th century and was refronted in the early 19th century. The front is rendered, while the sides are made of coursed limestone rubble, and there is a brick ridge stack at the rear with a slate roof. The building has a two-room parallel plan with a left-hand rear wing, forming a U-shaped plan with No. 8, which suggests it was originally used as an inn.
The structure has two storeys and an attic, featuring a two-window range. The left-hand side has a late 19th-century shop front with a door on the left and a plate-glass window, along with an inserted right-hand carriage archway that is shared with No. 8. There is a cornice and blocking course above. The windows are tripartite 6/6-pane sashes. The archway includes heavy timber joists and sandstone sets in the carriageway, with a side entrance beyond. The two-window rear wing has 19th-century casements.
Inside, there is a 19th-century stair from the side entrance, with an attic stair above that runs parallel to the side. The front roof has four bays divided by a 17th-century stud partition with lath and plaster, while the later rear wing is divided by a ridge stack and features a late 19th-century roof and wide oak floorboards. Additionally, there is a well located at the rear.
