Description
14 Sadler Street is a house that has been converted into a shop with a flat above. The facade dates from the mid to late 18th century and is attached to an earlier structure. The exterior is roughcast with a double Roman clay tiled roof, featuring a plain gable to the north and an abutment to the south. The building has a parallel-range double-depth plan, with the rear side facing Cathedral Green.
The building has three storeys and two bays. The late 19th-century shop front includes a shallow full-width fascia, a three-light display window, and curved quadrants on either side of a central recessed doorway, all featuring narrow glazing bars. To the right, there is a six-panel door providing access to the upper floors. The upper floors each have paired 12-pane sash windows set in smooth rendered architraves. On the north side, there is an additional retaining wall made of random stone rubble that reaches eaves level and has flat coping, which dates from the clearance of the adjoining site to create the Swan Garden around 1869.
The rear elevation is rendered and has a matching roof, along with a brick chimney stack. It is two storeys tall with an attic and consists of a single bay. The ground floor features a 12-pane sash window in a plain surround with exposed sash boxes, as well as a part-glazed door to the left. The first floor has a 16-pane sash window, and above it, there is a high gabled face dormer with tiled cheeks.
Historically, this property was first established around 1370 when the east side of Sadler Street was developed. The building originally straddled a north-south wall leading to the Cathedral Precinct.
