Description
The war memorial in North Curry, built in 1920, is made of Ham stone and features a tall hexagonal shaft topped with a Latin cross piece. The tapered shaft rises from a base adorned with dentils, and below it is a high square plinth that has inset trefoiled panels displaying the inscription. The inscription on the plinth includes the following: on the front (south face) it reads, "THE/ GLORIOUS/ DEAD/ IN MEMORY OF THOSE/ FROM NORTH CURRY/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919"; the west and east sides list the names of those who fell in World War I; and on the rear (north face) it states, "1939-1945/ LET THOSE/ WHO CAME AFTER/ SEE TO IT/ THAT THEIR NAMES/ BE NOT FORGOTTEN," along with a list of names from World War II. The memorial is set on a base of five shallow steps and is surrounded by timber posts connected with metal chains.
The memorial was unveiled on 28th November 1920, during a time when many such memorials were being constructed in the wake of the First World War. The names of those who died in the Second World War were added later. This war memorial is recognized for its architectural quality, craftsmanship, and its significant role in commemorating the impact of war on the community, as well as its prominent location in the village, which enhances its visual connection with other listed buildings.
