Description

The Billericay War Memorial is a war memorial located on High Street in Billericay. It was originally unveiled in 1921 to honor those who died in World War I, with an addition made in 1957 for World War II. The World War I memorial features a rectangular shaft made of Portland stone, which has a slight curve (entasis). On the north face of the shaft, there is a panel that reads, "To the glory of God and sacred to the memory of the men from this district who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-18," accompanied by a carved wreath. The shaft is topped with a stone Patee cross within a circle and stands on a tapered concrete plinth with a square base, which lists the names of 62 men who died in World War I.

The World War II memorial is located to the south of the original memorial and consists of a series of low red brick walls arranged in English bond, topped with stone coping. The taller wall at the back features a recessed stone panel that lists the names of 54 individuals who died in World War II. Flanking this panel are U-shaped walls that face inward, creating an embracing effect around the earlier memorial.

The memorial was unveiled on 16 October 1921 by Major General Sir William Thwaites, accompanied by a Guard of Honour of 40 ex-servicemen. The dedication was performed by Reverend S.L. Brown, Rural Dean. The additional World War II memorial was unveiled in 1957 by Lieutenant Colonel A.C. Newman.

The memorial holds group value with the nearby Church of St. Mary Magdalen and other listed buildings on High Street and Chapel Street.
