Description
The Chequers Inn, including 1 Chapel Street, is a Grade II listed building located on the east side of High Street in Billericay. Originally built in the 16th century, it was a single timber-framed and plastered house with cross wings at both the north and south ends. An extension was added in the 17th century, which is now known as No 42. The windows are primarily double-hung sashes with glazing bars, dating from the 18th or early 19th century. The Chequers Inn features two splayed bays on the ground floor, while No 1 Chapel Street has a 20th-century shop front. The roofs are tiled. This building is part of a group that includes Nos 38 to 42, the Church of St Mary Magdalen, No 46, and Nos 57 to 63, along with Nos 1 to 13 Chapel Street.
