Description
No 40 High Street is a 17th-century timber-framed and plastered house that features elements from the 18th century. It is located next to No 38 and is slightly set forward, presenting its gable end to the street. The building has two storeys and attics, with one window range that includes double-hung sashes with glazing bars. Originally, the upper storey jutted out at the front, but this was underbuilt in the 19th century, and the house now has a 20th-century shop front. The roof is tiled and features a half hip on the front gable. This property is part of a group that includes Nos 38 to 42, the Church of St Mary Magdalen, No 46, and Nos 57 to 63, along with Nos 1 to 13 Chapel Street.
