Description
The Queen's Jubilee Memorial is a monument dedicated to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, built in 1897 by Edmund Buckle, the Diocesan Architect, and constructed by Mr. C. Trask of Stoke-sub-Hamdon. It is made of Ham stone and stands on blue lias steps, with a triangular plan. The memorial features three arched openings topped with Dutch gables on the parapet, and small gables with lead waterspouts at the corners, culminating in a spire. The Dutch gables are intricately carved with the Star of India, the royal coat of arms, and St George and the Dragon, while the small gables display a thistle, a rose, and a shamrock. Each corner pilaster bears an inscription, though it is somewhat eroded, stating, "Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria completed the 60th year of her reign on June 20th, 1897. This monument was placed here by the loyal and grateful people of North Curry." The ribs of the vault include Latin inscriptions. The entire structure is raised on two steps with irregularly placed block stones, and the original railings are missing. This memorial serves as an important focal point in the square, which was renamed in Queen Victoria's honor, and its construction cost £250.
