Description
The war memorial in Curry Rivel was erected in 1920 and is constructed from Ham stone. It features an octagonal plan and is positioned on a semi-circular dais set back from the road. The memorial consists of an octagonal plinth topped by a tapering square shaft, which is crowned with a fleur-de-lys cross. It stands on a four-stepped octagonal base. Inscribed panels on five sides of the plinth commemorate and list the local men who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. The front face of the plinth bears the inscription: 'LEST WE FORGET / TO THE HONOURED / MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF CURRY RIVEL WHO / FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / ALSO IN THE MEMORY / OF THE FALLEN IN / THE 1939-1945 WAR'. The southeast and southwest sides of the plinth are inscribed with the names of the fallen. The memorial was dedicated on 7 November 1920, reflecting the significant period of memorial building following the First World War. It holds historic interest as a poignant reminder of the impact of these tragic events on the community and has good visual group value with other listed buildings at 'Bell Corner'.
