North Boundary Wall And Gateway Attached To Ottersey

The north boundary wall and gateway attached to Ottersey is an 18th-century structure. It is primarily built of cut and squared local stone, with some ashlar elements. At the north-west corner of Ottersey, there is an ashlar pier approximately 4 meters high, topped with a cornice cap and a pyramid finial. This pier leads to a main wall that is about 1.5 meters high and features a thick ashlar coping. Further west, the gateway is marked by four matching piers, each around 2 meters high. The outer piers flank a section of ashlar walling that has concave returns to the inner gate piers, which are nearly as tall as the outer piers. The gate piers have two fielded panels on their outer faces, and between them is a pair of wrought-iron gates, likely from the late 19th century. Beyond the gateway, the wall continues westward for a total length of about 27 meters, ending with a final matching pier. The wall has curved upsweeps at each end, enhancing the overall setting of Ottersey.
