Description

Pearses Orchard is a detached cottage located on Stoney Lane in Stocklinch. It dates back to the 16th century, with modifications made in the 18th and 20th centuries. The cottage is constructed of local stone rubble, featuring brick infill panels in the swept dormers, and has a thatched roof with a hipped west end and plain gables to the south and east. There are brick chimney stacks present. The building has an L-plan layout and is a single storey with attics, comprising five bays. Bay 1 is a 20th-century addition designed to match the original structure, while bay 5 features a gabled projection that may date from the 18th century. The windows include small 19th-century three-light horizontal-bar casements above and 20th-century small-pane casements below, both with bullnosed brick cills. The entrance is located at the rear. The east gable is weatherboarded and supported by a post and truss end.

Internally, the layout has been significantly altered. The original 16th-century small house was extended westward in the 20th century and southward for what was likely a carpenter's shop and possibly a cooperage. A second post and frame truss remains, along with a short length of framed partition and two triangular arched doorways, one of which has had its jambs cut away for the easy passage of barrels. Additionally, two large stone chimneys, likely added in the 17th or 18th century, feature wide fireplaces with chamfered timber beams.
