Description
The disused tannery buildings and waterwheel, now serving as a garage and storehouse, are located on the south side of Combe House Hotel. These structures date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and were restored in the mid-20th century. They are built of red sandstone random rubble, with the right side rendered, and feature a pantiled roof.
The layout includes a cartshed next to a store, which is fronted by a shelter shed, a waterwheel, a covered way, and an adjoining building that is now part of the hotel. The buildings are one and one and a half storeys high and consist of a 1:3:1:2 bay arrangement. There are gabled dormers in the right bays, 20th-century casement windows, and a central 20th-century window flanked by French windows. The outer left bay has a segmental-headed opening leading to the cartshed, which is next to the store and fronted by a three-bay shelter shed with inner supports.
A large overshot iron waterwheel, inscribed 'J. Culverwell and CD, Bridgwater 1892', is present, along with a catslide roofed bay with brick walls that provides access to the rear. The buildings are listed primarily for their historic interest and their group value with Combe House Hotel.
