Description
The dog pound at the entrance to Alfoxton Park dates from the 16th to 17th century and is constructed of red sandstone random rubble. It has a square plan situated on a sloping site, with the west wall standing about 3 metres high and the east wall about 1.5 metres high. The facade features an arched head that carries the crest of the St. Albyn family, likely added in the 19th century, along with a small slit below that provides a view into the interior of the pound. The corners of the structure are buttressed, and there is an entrance at the rear through a gap in the wall. In 1983, a plaque was added to commemorate the gift of this dog pound to the village of Holford by the descendants of the St. Albyn family, who were the owners of Alfoxton Park for many years. The dog pound is listed primarily for its historic interest.
