Description
The Church of St. Mary is a parish church with some 12th century work believed to survive at the base of the tower. The nave was refenestrated in the early 16th century, while the chancel and north porch were rebuilt between 1842 and 1844. The nave and chancel underwent restoration in the 1870s, and a vestry was added in 1888. The church is constructed of red sandstone random rubble with sandstone dressings, and it features slate roofs and coped verges.
The building consists of a two-bay nave, a west tower, a north porch that opens into the base of the tower, a one-bay chancel, and a vestry. The two-stage tower has a saddleback roof with coped verges, a moulded plinth, a square opening in the gable end, and a three-light window below with a hood mould. The gabled porch has double doors, and to the left are two three-light cinquefoil-headed mullioned windows with hood moulds. The chancel has a two-light window, while the east side features a three-light window. The vestry includes two two-light windows and a door on the west wall. The south wall of the nave has a three-light cinquefoil-headed mullioned window, along with a small two-light hollow chamfered mullioned window in the south-west corner.
Inside, the church has plastered walls, 19th century roofs, and late 19th century fittings, including a multi-coloured marble font.
