Description
Clouds End Cottage is a detached cottage dating from around 1600. It is built from local lias stone that is roughly cut and squared, and features a thatch roof with plain gables and brick end chimney stacks. The cottage has two storeys and three bays, with three light horizontal bar casement windows. The lower bay two has an early 20th-century part-glazed door under a timber lintel, which does not have a hood. There is a small matching projection at the rear.
Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain fireplaces in both gable ends, with one end featuring the remains of an oven and the other a bacon curing chamber. There is also an additional contemporary fireplace at the first floor level. The interior includes various chamfered beams with stop and run-outs, a spiral staircase, and a plank and muntin partition, as well as the timber framework of a flue.
There is a tradition that this cottage served as a resting house for the duty monk from Muchelney Abbey, who would have come over to take services in the Church of St Barnabas. If this is the case, the core of the building could date back to before 1530.
