Description
Banksia is a detached house with origins dating back to the 17th century, although it has been modified over time. The building is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, topped with a double Roman clay tile roof featuring stepped coped gables. It has brick chimney stacks at either end, set on stone bases. The house is designed in an L-shape and has two storeys with three bays.
The outer bays feature small pane casement windows beneath timber lintels, which are obscured by blind boxes. The central bay has a Regency style six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight above it, sheltered by a flat metal hood supported by shaped timber brackets and propped by three metal rods on each side. There is a lean-to structure against the west gable and a substantial outshut at the rear. The rear wing includes a two-storey bay window with eight, twelve, and eight-pane sashes beneath a lead flat roof.
While the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain a spiral staircase leading to the attic and remnants of a stairlight. On the southeast corner of the property, there is a tall stone wing wall that sweeps down at an angle. The remaining boundaries to the east and south are marked by cast iron railings with bud finials, and there is a wrought iron gate set at an angle, resting on a low stone base on the south side. These features contribute to the overall setting of the house and enhance the streetscape, particularly as it sits on a bend in the main road.
