Description
England's Side is a detached cottage with origins dating back to the 16th century. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, topped with a double Roman clay tile roof featuring a simple gable overhang. The cottage has brick chimney stacks, one of which includes a traditional baffle. It stands two storeys high and consists of five bays. The windows are mostly 3-light casements, with horizontal bars on the first and second bays; the second bay has no upper window, while the remaining bays have plain windows. There is a boarded door in a heavy frame located in the lower fourth bay. All openings are topped with timber lintels.
On the east gable, there is a single-storey lean-to with a louvred opening, and to the west gable, there is a lower extension with a rounded end that features two casement windows. There are signs that both roofs may have been raised at some point. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain traces of a stone smoke bay that spans the entire house in the west gable, and a fireplace dating to around 1600 in the opposite gable, along with various chamfered beams.
