Description

Colliers and the attached forge is a house and former wagon works dating from the 16th or 17th century, with alterations and a new facade added in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building features rubble construction, some roughcast, and is colourwashed, with double-Roman tiled roofs and brick and rendered stacks. The house is two storeys high and consists of four bays, predominantly featuring 3-light casement windows. There are two door openings with plank doors; to the left is a lias porch with a thatched roof, and to the right is a rendered porch with a double-Roman tiled roof. There is also a small door opening on the extreme left, which has a plank door.

The wagon works, which includes the forge on the right, is a single storey with an attic. It has casement windows with horizontal glazing bars and lapped glass. There is a door opening on the left with a plank door and a large sliding plank door on the right. Inside the house, there are two timber-framed partitions that divide the ground floor rooms, one of which has a doorway with a peak-head frame. The ceilings feature chamfered and stopped beams, and there are three fireplaces with wooden bressumers. The forge includes fireplaces with two large fitted 19th-century bellows, which is a rare survival.
