Description

The Forge is a house that incorporates a former forge, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with the forge itself added in the late 19th century. The house underwent significant refurbishment around 1970, with a rear extension added around 1980. It is constructed of plastered local stone rubble, possibly with some cob, and features a north end wall clad in corrugated iron. The stacks are made of stone rubble topped with 20th-century brick, while the house has a thatched roof, and the former forge and extension have slate roofs.

The house has a two-room plan facing west. The right (north) room includes a gable-end stack, which is a 20th-century addition, while the larger left room has an axial stack that backs onto the right room. The forge is a single-storey extension at the left (south) end, now converted for domestic use, and there is a single-storey kitchen extension at the rear of the former forge. The house itself is two storeys tall.

The exterior features a regular but not symmetrical three-window front with 20th-century casements that include glazing bars. There are low thatch eyebrows over the first-floor windows. The front doorway is located at the left end of the house and has a 20th-century two-flap door beneath a contemporary thatched hood. The former forge has three 20th-century casements with glazing bars, and both the main roof and the former forge roof are gable-ended.

Inside, the interior largely reflects 20th-century modernisations, and much of the original carpentry detail has been replaced. However, the original fireplace remains, constructed of stone rubble with an oak-framed front.
