Description
Church Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and was modernised around 1970. It is constructed from plastered local stone rubble, possibly with some cob, and features a stone rubble stack topped with 19th-century brick and thatched roofs. The cottage has a small two-room plan and faces east-south-east, with its plot extending into the corner of the churchyard. The larger room on the left (south) is heated by a gable-end stack.
The exterior is nearly symmetrical with a two-window front and an additional ground floor window, all of which are 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The central doorway features a 20th-century plank door behind a contemporary gabled porch, and the roof is gable-ended.
Inside, the cottage was significantly modernised around 1970, leading to the replacement of much of the carpentry detail. The crossbeam in the larger room was replaced, although the slender joists are likely original. The fireplace was lined with brick during the modernisation, but its original chamfered oak lintel remains exposed. The roof has not been inspected. This cottage is part of a group of attractive traditional thatch-roofed buildings near the Church of St Nicholas.
