Description

The Old Forge is a house that incorporates a former forge, dating from the late 17th century to the 19th century. It features rendered cob and rubble walls, with a thatched roof that is gabled on the left and half-hipped on the right end. The building has a projecting rubble stack at the left gable end and another axial stack located between the rear wing and the forge.

The layout of the house is L-shaped, consisting of two rooms at the front and a heated rear wing, which may be a slightly later addition and is said to have been a separate cottage. The front left room is heated by a fireplace in its end wall. In the angle between the front range and the rear wing, there is a 19th-century outshut. Beyond the rear wing is a single-storey extension that was formerly a forge, likely added in the late 18th or 19th century.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a regular two-window front featuring early 20th-century small-paned two-light casements. There is a central 19th-century open-fronted gabled porch with a plank door. The right-hand end wall has a 19th-century two-light small-paned casement on the ground floor. The rear wing includes 19th-century and early 20th-century small two-light casements on the first floor, along with a 19th-century lean-to built in front of it. The single-storey forge at the end of the wing has a 20th-century porch with a panelled door and two late 20th-century casements.

Inside, the front range features wany narrow-chamfered ceiling joists, and the left-hand room contains an open fireplace with a roughly chamfered wooden lintel. The rear wing has a fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel that includes run-out stops. The roof timbers consist of rough straight principal rafters.
