Description
Lower Stone is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building has rubble and cob walls that are partly rendered, topped by a gable-ended corrugated asbestos roof. There are brick stacks at each gable end. The layout includes two main heated rooms, one at each end, with a central axial passage in front of a small service room that has an adjoining staircase. The exterior is two storeys high and features an asymmetrical front with four windows, which are late 18th century or early 19th century casements with H-L hinges in configurations of 1, 2, 3, and 4 lights. There is a 20th-century lean-to porch on the right-hand end with a part-glazed door, and 19th and 20th-century lean-tos extend along the rear wall. Inside, most features are covered up, but one chamfered ceiling beam is visible above a partition. Although it lacks many internal features, the house retains an interesting plan form and a traditional external appearance.
