Description

The windmill at Petrockstowe, dating from the 18th century, is currently derelict and roofless. There was a date stone inscribed "F.B. 1756," but this was not visible during the inspection in 1987. The structure features squared stone rubble walls that taper, with a circular plan. There is evidence of two doorways, although only the northeast doorway is definitely original. This doorway has a heavy wooden lintel on the inside, and the stonework on the outside suggests it was originally arched. The walls rise to approximately 20 to 25 feet high and include two window openings positioned fairly high up. The windmill was previously used for pumping water to Heanton Satchville in the nearby parish of Huish, for which a pipeline still exists.
