Description

A row of three cottages, largely dating to the 18th century, situated in West Chinnock. The cottages are constructed from local stone rubble and have thatched roofs with a coped east gable and a hip to the west. Brick chimney stacks are present. The arrangement is two storeys high, with seven bays in total. The windows are timber casements, mostly with small panes, some of which are leaded. Plain entrance doors are sheltered by thatched hoods between bays two and three (number 2) and bays five and six (number 3), with the entrance to number 1 located in the east gable. An unpublished survey from 1982 notes plain chamfered beams in number 2, including one closed and several open collar trusses. The cottages have a historical connection with the nearby property at number 47 Higher Street. Approximately 1.5 metres north of number 1, between bays one and two, is a well. The well features a stepped apron and a cover made of stone slabs, with holes for a spindle in two opposite sides, and a lightly raked slab roof. The well’s style is similar to that of the well found at Duckpool Lane, East Lane, Higher Street Junction.
