Description
High Cross is a cottage dating from the early 17th century. It is built from local stone that has been cut and squared, with Ham stone dressings, and features a Welsh slate roof between coped gables and rendered end chimney stacks. The cottage is two stories tall and has a symmetrical front with three bays. The lower bays one and three have four-light ovolo moulded mullioned windows with leaded lights, while bay two features a moulded chamfered arched doorway, all set beneath a continuous string course that is raised above the doorway. Above the doorway, there is a stone plaque that is incised with 'ANO DNI 1604 R.W.'. The first floor has three-light leaded casements with an exposed wall plate above. Although the interior has not been seen, a report from the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society in 1978 mentions an original continuous outshut, a half-post and truss structure, timber framed partitions, chamfered beams with step and run-out stops, a fireplace, and a former smoke-bay.
