Description
No. 8 Market Place is a late 18th century building that was previously known as the Abbey Gate Restaurant. It features painted brickwork combined with some late medieval timber framing and rubble. The building has two storeys and a hipped pantile roof with parapet coping. There are four windows with keyblocks, fixed lights, and glazing bars, although modern shop fronts have been added. Inside, the building retains much of its original timber work, including a pointed arch with abbatial arms and a four-centred fireplace. It is said to have originally been part of the Abbey school. This building is part of an important group that includes the listed buildings on the east side of the Market Place, the Market Cross, Nos 2 to 12 (even) High Street, Abbey Gatehouse, Town Hall, and St Dunstan's House on Magdalene Street.
