Description

The former railway viaduct, now disused, was opened in 1874 for the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, serving the Shepton Mallet to Bath extension. It was doubled in width in 1894 and partially rebuilt in 1946. The viaduct features six arches of varying height that carry an elevated double-width trackway at right angles over Bath Road. The northern half is constructed with rock-faced masonry, while the southern half is brick-faced, with brick linings at all arch heads. Large piers at each end have pyramidal capstones, and there is 20th-century concrete shuttering for reinforcement on the central piers. This structure is significant as it frames an entrance into the town from the north.
