Description
Odcombe Voluntary Aided Primary School is a school building dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble made from Ham stone, with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof that features stepped coped gables and a stone chimney stack. The building is single-storey and consists of three bays on each side.
The eastern section of the school is slightly larger and includes three-light pointed arched windows with Y-tracery and no labels. There is a pointed arched doorway located under an arched label between the first and second bays, along with a later door in a lean-to structure against the east gable. The western gable features a late 19th-century extension that has end buttresses, a moulded eaves course, and windows that are cruciform wave moulded with mullions and transoms, set in hollow-chamfered recesses under square labels that drop to transom level. The windows are rectangular-leaded below and ornamentally-leaded above the transoms. A small lancet window is present in the south gable.
About one metre south of the building, there are wrought-iron railings on a low stone wall, which are approximately one metre high. These railings have arrowhead spikes and urn finials on braced standards, with a gap opposite the doorway. The railings contribute to the overall setting of the school.
