Description

An early 19th century detached cottage is located on Donne Lane in Odcombe. It is built of ham stone rubble with coursed construction, ashlar quoins, and some brick dressings. The roof is of plain clay tile, with stone slate base courses between high, stepped, coped gables indicating a previous thatched roof. Brick chimney stacks are present. The cottage has two storeys and three bays. It features horizontal-bar casement windows; the outer bays have three-light windows and the upper central window has two lights. Upper windows have timber lintols, while lower windows are topped with gauged brick flat arches. A six-panel flush door with top lights is located in the lower bay, set in a deep reveal with ashlar dressings and a flat stone hood on brackets. Extensions have been added to both sides of the original structure. A single-bay extension to the north gable has a double Roman clay tiled roof, is set lower, and features matching two-light windows at each level, along with a boarded door to the left, all under timber lintols. A lean-to is attached to the south gable, featuring a Welsh slate roof triangular in plan with a rounded point, brick infill to the front incorporating a window and a boarded door. The purpose of the lean-to is unknown. The interior has not been inspected. This is a good example of a middle-class cottage from the 19th century, likely with few alterations beyond the roof.
