Description

This is a mid-19th century school building, now divided into two houses. It was altered and extended in the 20th century. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed sandstone on a chamfered plinth, with ashlar dressings, some of which are now colour-washed. It has a slate roof with stone copings and roll-moulded finials.

The main front is a single storey and three bays, with the end bays cross-gabled. It features offset intermediate and angle buttresses. A central doorway leads to the Classroom Cottage, with a board door and wrought-iron hinges, set in a chamfered quoined opening with a two-centred head. There is a pent roof extension to the left of the doorway, shielding the entrance to The Old School House. A wing on the right side has a four-light mullion window, with transomed centre lights, above a chamfered sill, within a quoined surround. There are paired ventilation slits in the gable apex. A wing on the left has a five-light window featuring stepped cusped lancets, a chamfered sill, and a two-centred relieving arch. The left crosswing contains a diagonally-set clock tower and bellcote, with clock faces facing south and west. The bell openings are balustraded and louvred, beneath a pyramidal steeple topped with a wrought-iron cockerel weathervane.
